Welcome to the annual live online conference (CO11). You are cordially invited to participate at the live online conference on the weekend of Feb 4-6, 2011.<br/><br/>The conference will be of interest to educators, administrators, students, and community members who value the importance of integrating technology into the curriculum to improve instruction and learning. Online learning involves various skills on the part of the instructor and learner. These include social and communication skills, social networking, independent learning strategies, critical and higher order thinking skills, creativity, and effective online and face-to-face facilitation. In addition, there are many challenges that educators, administrators, students and community members face.<br/>The theme of the conference is, connecting online for instruction and learning that goes beyond the classroom. Presenters from around the globe will discuss the following topics:<br/>

Slide 1 : Moodle for Elementary Writing and Science Dan McGuire Minneapolis, Mn, USA

Slide 2 : Today we'll look at: Using the Database Module for recording science observations Using a Forum for recording science observations Add screen shots from class moodle Using the Database Module for a reading log of books students have read. Using Tutors to assist students in writing about their science observations. Could also work similarly to have tutors coach students in the writing about Reading. I had the relationship with the Graduate Student Science group, so That's area we chose. ADD pictures Using the Assignment Module as a way to teach writing skills to elementary students.

Slide 3 : For the last three years, the 21st Century tool, Moodle, has enabled me to make writing fun for 8 and 9 year olds, the ones who start welling up with tears when you tell them that all of the words they just managed to get on a piece of paper with a pencil should be reordered or changed.

Slide 4 : A word processor and the Moodle software make editing, all that adding and subtracting of words, peer comments, and teacher comments easier and doable for the young minds and fingers that are still wrestling with this puzzle called written language.

Slide 5 : Last spring on Earth Day, my class was paperless for the day. We took a learning walk and explored the history and science rich neighborhood near our school.

Slide 7 : Name: Dan Book title: Hoot Book author: Carl Hiassen Book level: ?? Characters: Main and supporting: Roy, Beatrice, Mullet Fingers, Roy's mom and Dad and a whole bunch of other folks. Setting: A small in town in Florida. Problems in the story: There are several problems but the main one is stopping Mother Paula's from destroying the habitat of the burrowing owls. Solutions to the story: The solutions are as numerous and varied as the problems. Read the book and use complete sentences when you write (don't use fragments like I did above.) This is an example of one entry in the Reading log
