Autoimmune diseases : Autoimmune diseases Autoimmune disease: diseases arise from an overactive immune response of the body against substances and tissues normally present in the body.

What is MS? : What is MS? MS or Multiple Sclerosis is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS).

The pathophysiology of MS : The pathophysiology of MS CNS consist of the Brain and the spinal cord. Like any other system, the nervous system has a specialized cells called neurons.

Slide 5 : The major problem in MS disease is that the myelin sheath destroyed. “Plaques” will block the impulse transmission.

Causes : Causes Genetic heredity: members with MS history. Viral infection: High levels of antibodies towards viruses Autoimmune reaction.

Causes : Causes 4.Geography: in countries with 40C and above T. 5. Diet: a lot of diary products and animal fats. 6. Environmental factors.

Types of MS : Types of MS Primary Prograsive Multiple Sclerosis (PPMS) 15% of MS patients More common in females . Has a later onset, usually after age 40 years. Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS) Most common form of the disease Classic MS clinical pattern marked by exacerbations

Types of MS : Types of MS Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS) About 80 % of RRMS cases develop a secondary progressive disease pattern. It is a later stage of RRMS rather than a separate variant. Progressive-relapsing Multiple Sclerosis (PRMS) rare type people experience both steadily worsening symptoms and attacks during periods of remission

Signs and symptoms : Signs and symptoms Visual Symptoms (loss of color vision, Double Vision) Motor Symptoms (speech problems, total loss of muscle strength, movement disturbances) Sensory Symptoms (Facial pain. Loss of awareness of location of body parts, loss of sensation)

Signs and symptoms : Signs and symptoms Coordination and Balance Symptoms (Loss of coordination. Abnormal balance function in the inner ear) Bladder and Sexual Symptoms Cognitive Symptoms (Bipolar syndrome, Depression, Mood swings)

Treatment : Treatment The Treatment goals include: improving the speed of recovery from attacks (drugs) reducing the number of attacks relief from complications due to the loss of function. Medications (ease MS attacks)

Treatment : Treatment 2. Physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy 3. Surgery For severe tremor (shakiness) For severe spasticity (muscle stiffness)
