Chemistry Department Safety WSU : Chemistry Department Safety WSU Safety First for All In Research and Teaching Safety

Safety : Safety Personal protective Equipment. Standard operating procedures (SOP). Handling potentially dangerous materials. Waste disposal. Safety Committee. CONTENT

Introduction : Introduction Training is an indispensable part of all Safety and Health Programs to protect employees from job related injuries or illness. Many research studies have concluded that new employees have a higher rate of accidents. Ignorance of hazards or correct work practices is partly the cause for this. Training presents a partial solution. Safety

Employees Responsibilities : Employees Responsibilities Attend required training sessions. Study and follow all safe practices that apply . Coordinate and cooperate with all other employees to try to eliminate on-the-job injuries and illnesses. Apply the principles of accident prevention in their daily work and use proper safety devices and protective equipment (PPE) as required.

Employees Responsibilities : Care for, clean, and properly maintain all PPE. Inform the supervisor of the need to repair or replace PPE Report promptly to their supervisor every industrial injury or occupational illness. Do not remove, damage, or carry off any safeguard notice. Do everything reasonably necessary to protect the life and safety of other employees. Employees Responsibilities

Employee training material should include: : Employee training material should include: Procedures to detect hazardous chemicals spills such as inspection, signage and labeling, odor, real-time monitoring, air sampling, and others. Symptoms related to exposure to hazardous chemicals. Good laboratory practices, including personal protective equipment, and warning systems used in each laboratory. Emergency response actions. Standard Operating Procedures. Hazardous Waste Management procedures.

Personal protective equipment : Personal protective equipment includes, but is not limited to: Eye and face protection Head protection Hand protection Protective clothing Protective footwear Respiratory protective devices Hearing protectors. Fume Hoods and Other Containment Devices Safety Shields Air Monitoring Safety Personal protective equipment

Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Laboratory Chemicals : Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for Laboratory Chemicals SOPs are established practices for using chemicals or procedures. SOPs are intended to provide guidance on how to safely work with a specific class of chemical or hazard. SOPs are generic in nature. They address the use and handling of substances by hazard class only. In some instances multiple SOPs may be applicable for a specific chemical (i.e., both the SOP for flammable liquids and carcinogens would apply to benzene). If you have questions contact the Chemistry Department Storeroom (509-335-3325), email Gary Johnson, or contact the Principal Investigator of your laboratory. SOP can be overridden when required, however document exactly how the SOP has been changed.

Standard Operating Procedures : Standard Operating Procedures University’s SOPs are located in Safety Policies and Procedures Manual (SPPM). There may be a copy in the laboratory. If not, the manual is located at http://www.wsu.edu/manuals_forms/HTML/SPPM/S00_Intro_and_Indexes/S02.01_Table_of_Contents.htm Safety

Slide10 : Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s). Chemistry Department SOP located online at HTTP://www.wsu.edu/~gjohnso2/Safety/Intro.html. These are very broad SOP’s are written to be modified by the individual investigator. Safety

Standard Operating Procedures SOP : Laboratory Specific SOP Each laboratory should have them. Before starting a project, you should be introduced to them. Very laboratory specific. Safety Standard Operating Procedures SOP

Biohazards – Non research : Biohazards – Non research Handling biological fluids in the laboratory or what to do if someone gets sick in your area. Handle all biological fluids as if they are dangerous Use proper protection to prevent skin adsorption (IE. gloves), Clean hand thoroughly after accidental contact. Inform custodial staff (or safety committee representative) of the event. Safety

Emergency response : Emergency response Each laboratory should have an emergency response procedure in place. At the minimum the procedure should include Procedure for evacuating the building, Meeting place outside the building, Accounting for laboratory personnel, Reporting to the building emergency response team. Safety

Waste Disposal : Waste Disposal Chemical Waste Disposal. Follow “Chemical Waste Disposal” SOP. (found online at the Department site.) Must be in a properly labeled and dated container. These wastes are handled through the departmental store room in Fulmer 23. Waste labels are available from the store room. Safety

Slide15 : Follow the University Biological waste procedures found in the Safety Policies and Procedures manual online (section S80.12 in the Regulated Waste Identification Guide) Safety Biological Waste Disposal.

Radioactive Waste Disposal : Handled by Radiation Safety office. Must be in a properly labeled and approved radioactive waste container. Safety Radioactive Waste Disposal

Sharps i.e.. needles, syringes, and scalpels Waste Disposal. : Do not place in trash containers in lab. Must be destroyed before disposal. Include with biowaste. Safety Sharps i.e.. needles, syringes, and scalpels Waste Disposal.

Broken Glass Waste disposal : Place all broken glass in glass waste container in lab. When this container is full take it and dump it into dumpster located outside the south entrance to Fulmer Annex ( on College Avenue). Do not put glass or sharps in trashcans. Safety Broken Glass Waste disposal

Chemistry Department Safety : Chemistry Department Safety Unsafe conditions. report to the safety committee any unsafe conditions that you observe. Unsafe acts. Immediate danger try to correct. otherwise bring to attention of supervisor. Safety

Chemistry Department Safety : Chemistry Department Safety Always familiarize yourself with the laboratory layout before beginning work in the lab. Exits. Safety showers and eyewashes. Fire extinguishers. Safety

Injuries : If you are injured immediately seek help. After you have received help fill out an accident report form-. See your supervisor for this form (or the Safety Committee Chair). Send a copy of the form to the Safety Committee Chair. Safety Injuries

Slide22 : You have the right to know the dangers of any chemical you are working with. Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS’s). Contain a required set of safety information and PPE required to work with specific chemicals or mixtures. Safety “Right to know”

Basic rules for all laboratories : No eating or drinking in labs Wear your personal protective equipment No cloth or open toe shoes are allowed in labs No unauthorized experiments Be aware of what is going on around you Do not run No pets allowed in building Safety Basic rules for all laboratories
