Choose one of the following starting points. 1 Thats the way I see things Artists such as Braque, Cézanne and Picasso began to explore and analyse how we see things by looking at everyday objects. Using research into appropriate examples, produce your own work based on a group of objects which you have selected. 2 Fauvism The strongly expressive work of van Gogh influenced the Fauves, including Derain, Matisse and Vlaminck. They used brilliant and contrasting colours to express their feelings. Look at the work of suitable artists and produce your own response to your surroundings. 3 Central America The visual arts of the early civilisations of Central America were often used to tell stories and myths about peoples daily lives and spiritual beliefs. Explore the work of one of these cultures and produce work in any medium that says something about your life or beliefs. 4 Moving Images Artists such as Francis Bacon and Umberto Boccioni were clearly influenced by the way photography can be used to suggest movement. More recently artists such as Rebecca Horn and Bill Viola have used film, video and performance to create movement. From your research into the work of such artists and how they have suggested or created movement, produce your own response in any suitable medium.3 G/M140610/S05/3202/T 5 Landscape Over the centuries artists have responded to many different kinds of landscape. Study the work of appropriate artists and produce your own response based on one of the following. (a) Urban Landscape. (b) Industrial Landscape. (c) Rural Landscape. 6 Installations A number of artists have created installations inside galleries and other spaces. Look at appropriate examples in the work of artists such as Mona Hatoum, Ed Kienholz and Cornelia Parker and develop your own proposal for an installation for a space of your choice. 7 Identity Look at the suggestions below based on the starting point Identity. You may use one of these suggestions or you could develop your own interpretation. (a) Artists have often explored their identity or that of other people through portraits. You could choose portraiture and look at ways of expressing either your own or someone elses identity. (b) The identity of a commercial product is promoted through advertising. You might investigate current advertising campaigns and the way some artists have used the idea of advertising in their work. (c) Cultural identity is sometimes shown in traditional or popular arts. You could choose one particular culture and explore examples of such work as the basis for your own ideas.
