Program Funding : Program Funding Mathematics and Science Teacher Recruitment, Alternative Certification, and Induction (MASTRACI): Partial funding provided by U.S. Dept. of Education Teacher Quality Enhancement Program 84.336C. Mathematics and Science Teacher Recruitment and Support (MASTERS): Partial funding provided by Florida Department of Education, Title IIb Mathematics/Science Partnership grant.

The Problem : The Problem In the fall of 2006, Florida needed 33,000 new teachers Replacement of leavers Increase in population Reduction of class size (constitutional amendment) In Mathematics and Science, Florida needed 4,550 new teachers Florida’s colleges and universities produced 250 mathematics and science teachers

MASTERS : MASTERS Increase the pool of qualified candidates Augment District orientation program with subject-specific preparation (“pedagogical content knowledge”) Provide ongoing support during the first year (professional development, mentoring) Provide paths to certification through State-approved, district-based program Master of Arts in Teaching designed for career-change teachers at USF
