advantage. Every time you overcome a hurdle you gain confidence, reaffirm your commitment to your goal while growing stronger, wiser and better.
Welcome failed attempts because nothing teaches you faster and more effectively.
Be flexible and open-minded. Opportunities present themselves, which often lead to something better than we’d imagined or planned for. If we’re rigid and inflexible with our approach, we’ll let these opportunities pass us by.

Ashley A. Reynolds, MS, RD, LDN : Ashley A. Reynolds, MS, RD, LDN Advice: Try something new!
“I can’t stress enough how valuable it is to be open to opportunities- it’s amazing how quickly one thing leads to another. I started out in this field thinking I’d be somewhere else entirely at this point and it’s so important to be open-minded and try new things (both paid and unpaid).
You never know what you’ll enjoy! Be passionate about what you do and never stop learning- this will help you find your niche in the field.
Don’t burn your bridges. Make sure all professional relationships stay positive and strive to give things your all. You never know whose path you’ll cross in the future or whom you’ll need to reach out to for guidance.
Janel Ovrut MS RD LDN : Janel Ovrut MS RD LDN Coordinated dietetics program at Syracuse
Tufts for a masters in Nutrition Communication.
Never wanted to work in clinical, and always had a passion for educating others.
After grad school, worked part time for a corporate wellness company – economy turned sour, became a consultant for them and started to explore finding more work on my own.
By default, I “became” self-employed and started pitching to companies for corporate wellness, or people would request my services.
I also do counseling on the side, freelance writing, and speaking.
Janel Ovrut MS RD LDN : Janel Ovrut MS RD LDN Most recently, I got hired by a Boston performing arts college where I teach freshmen nutrition and counsel for their health services.
Working at a behavioral school part time for 6 years as their dietitian and I consider this job my “cash cow.”
Rely on the money and health insurance/benefits while I’m able to peruse the gigs I’m really passionate about.
I’m finally doing all the jobs I love! I don’t work a consistent schedule, but for the most part, I’m my own boss and am finally getting to a point where I love what I do!
Janel Ovrut MS RD LDN : Janel Ovrut MS RD LDN I have worked SO many jobs in my 6 years as a dietitian, many of them were pretty short-term! But all of them have brought me closer to where I want to be in my career.
I also spent time taking any gig that came to me, whether it paid or not. I think this really helped me learn the business and see what I wanted to do long term.
Actively involved with the Massachusetts Dietetic Association board as well as an ADA committee and this networking has been very valuable to me.
Contributing writer for Super Kids Nutrition Inc
These networks have given me amazing opportunities in the field that have helped me build my work.
Janel Ovrut MS RD LDN : Janel Ovrut MS RD LDN I see every encounter, every job (good or bad), every event, and every person I meet as a new opportunity.

I've volunteered my whole life and it always leads somewhere unexpected - learning about myself, about a nutrition principle, or even a job opportunity.

WANDA SIU-CHAN, MS, RD, CDE DIETETIC INTERNSHIP DIRECTOR /LECTURER AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY. : WANDA SIU-CHAN, MS, RD, CDE DIETETIC INTERNSHIP DIRECTOR /LECTURER AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY. Started working as per diem dietitian/foodservice supervisor.
Worked in inpatient clinical, outpatient diabetes education, clinical nutrition management, program management for a website, homecare and consulting.
Currently, the director of a dietetic internship program. I am always inspired and amazed by the interns we have at SFSU who are much more mature, knowledgeable, dedicated, and focused then I ever was as a student.
I really enjoy working with our 40+ preceptors from all over the Greater San Francisco Bay Area - who enthusiastically and generously share their time, energy, and expertise with our interns year after year.
WANDA SIU-CHAN, MS, RD, CDE DIETETIC INTERNSHIP DIRECTOR /LECTURER AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY. : WANDA SIU-CHAN, MS, RD, CDE DIETETIC INTERNSHIP DIRECTOR /LECTURER AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY. Strongly encourage new RDs to look for and to welcome opportunities that come their way. You never know what doors those opportunities will open up for you down the road.
I did not have the foresight early in my career to figure out a career path. But, I did take opportunities that came my way, and those opportunities opened up more and more doors for me.
After completing my M.S., I saw a job posting for a local community college to teach an evening GE Nutrition Class.
One year later, with some teaching experience under my belt, someone called to ask me if I would be interested in teaching clinical. That eventually led to the wonderful job I currently have as an internship director.
WANDA SIU-CHAN, MS, RD, CDE DIETETIC INTERNSHIP DIRECTOR /LECTURER AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY. : WANDA SIU-CHAN, MS, RD, CDE DIETETIC INTERNSHIP DIRECTOR /LECTURER AT SAN FRANCISCO STATE UNIVERSITY. Volunteering in your local dietetic association is invaluable.
When I was a new RD, I checked one of those “volunteer” boxes on the local dietetics’ membership. After a few years of doing program planning, I was nominated and elected President of the association and a few years later, I was nominated and elected as a VP in CDA. Did I plan for that? No…
Dietetics is an amazing field with a wide variety of career opportunities. The possibilities are endless. And, if you find yourself doing something that you aren’t crazy about, know that your knowledge and skills are transferable, take a risk, and find something else!
Orville E. Bigelow, M.S., R.D : Orville E. Bigelow, M.S., R.D Flight attendant, and like many people I went back to school to start a new career.

Manager of Nutrition Services at Project Angel Food in
Los Angeles – deliver over 13,000 meals per week to individuals struggling with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other life-threatening illnesses
Teaches online nutrition classes for two schools and has also taught for Cal State L.A.
Orville E. Bigelow, M.S., R.D : Orville E. Bigelow, M.S., R.D Past volunteer experience includes being on the Board of Directors for SOS Mentor, a local organization that helps to combat obesity in schools and on the Los Angeles District (LAD) of the California Dietetic Association.
Currently he is starting a 3 year stint as a program reviewer for the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE).
Volunteering is one of the most important things that you can do to help advance your career. Volunteering not only helps you to develop job skills and learn new ‘tricks’, but it also helps you to network with people…and networking is key in our industry!
Orville E. Bigelow, M.S., R.D : Orville E. Bigelow, M.S., R.D Words of Wisdom: Consider what you want to do in your career and “think outside of the box”. When I first started back to school I was a bit worried that my only options in the field would be to work in a hospital or in a school lunch line. Now I see that is no longer true. But we can’t ever expect opportunities to drop in our lap (though sometimes they will!), we must go out and make them happen!
Advice I give to other professionals is to never stop learning! It is important that we are always up to date on information in our field because it changes so much day by day! In addition, if there is a skill that you don’t have (especially in the realm of technology) learn it! We must always ensure that we don’t become obsolete!
