Introduction : Introduction Let’s begin with the Gender of names in Italian
There are two main categories ( genders ) of nouns
Masculine ( he )
Feminine ( she)
We have no Neuter form ( it)
Masculine : Masculine Masculine nouns in the singular ( one only) end in
-0
Masculine nouns in the plural ( more than one) end in
-I
Ex: bambino ( boy )
bambini ( boys)
Feminine : Feminine Feminine nouns in the singular (one only) end in
-a
Feminine nouns in the plural ( more than one) end in
-e
Ex: bambina ( girl )
bambine ( girls )
A bit more.. : A bit more.. Nouns indicating objects fall into the above categories
Ex: tavolo table
sedia chair
libro book
penna pen
quadro painting
porta door
And….. : And….. There are a few exceptions to the endings for masculine and feminine if we are talking about people. It happens when Italian has only one form for masculine and feminine
Ex: giudice judge
pilota pilot
Identify the person’s role and not the gender
Articles : Articles We translate the article the differently according to the noun it goes with
