Key Concept: Subtraction of three digits numbers with regrouping Plan of action: How to subtract 3 digit numbers with regrouping • Place one number above the other so that the hundreds', tens' and ones' places are lined up. Draw a line under the bottom number. 91 72 • Subtract the numbers in the ones place column (1 -2 =?). Borrow one from the tens' place to make the top value larger than the bottom value. After this is done, subtract (11 -2 = 9) and place the 9 below the line in the ones' place column. 8 91 72 9 • Subtract the digits in the tens' place column (8 -7 = 1) and place the answer below the line in the tens' place column 8 91 72 19 What they already know: The student knows how to subtract 2 and 3-digit numbers without regrouping. GRADE 4 TOPIC: SUBTRACTION 4_3_3_T © 2009 -2011 tutorco.com 2 2. Subtract 26 from 43 Tens Ones 3 13 4 3 -2 6 1 7 3. Subtract 24 from 81 Tens Ones 7 11 8 1 -2 4 5 7 Suggested example: 1. Subtract 65 from 93 Tens Ones 8 13 9 3 -6 5 2 8 Firstly write the digits according to their place value and then subtract the digit at the ones place from the same place value digit, since 3 is less than 5,so 3 – 5 is not possible, hence we take away 1 from tens place and then 9 becomes 8 and 3 becomes 13,now 13 – 5 = 8, then we subtract the digits at the tens place, 8 – 6 = 2.
