Acknowledgments Bird, Reddy, Cummins, Bates. (2010, 2009). Literacy and technology in inclusive educational settings. Second Edition (binder-ready). New York: Pearson Custom Publishing. Intended for Any High School Student Steps: 1.) As the student reads the text, place one of four different marks in the margin of the book or on sticky notes. 2.) Notes recorded must be in the students’ own words. 3.) After reading, transfer notes into the INSERT summary chart according to the marking that the student identified the information with. This activity allows students to take notes in a different form. They not only read the text, but they also identify whether or not they knew the [correct] informa-tion as well as re-record the notes in their own interpretations. LITERACY PAMPHLET Writing Strategy Learning Logs Note-Taking Strategy INSERT Method √ -+ ? I know that “chien” means “dog” I thought “rose” meant “rose”, not “pink” I learned that “tu” and “vous” both mean “you” Why is French grammar different that English Steps: 1.) Students write about a given topic or a topic they choose. They can either write what they learned, how they learned, re-actions, feelings, etc. Teachers/parents can promote a topic of thought and the students free write. Example: What did I understand about the work we did in class today? 2.) Students hand in their entries for feedback on grammar, spelling, etc. This activity allows students to either form their own question(s)/topics and ideas or just ideas from a given topic. It helps them writing “creatively” as well as helps the individual to better their com-prehension of the English language. Steps: 1.) Divide a sheet of pa-per into three (3) sections. Label each section at the top, the first being “K”, the second “W”, and the third “L”. 2.) Brainstorm what the student(s) already know about the topic of the reading. Place these ideas under the “K” column. 3.) Brainstorm what the student(s) want to know about the topic. Place these ideas under the “W” column. 4.) Read the text instructed for this assignment. 5.) Complete the last section of the chart, revealing what the stu-dent(s) learned. Reading Strategy K-W-L Chart (Know, Want to know, Learn) Steps: 1.) Identify the topic and a sub-topic, or an inquiry question about the topic as well as state the information you already know. 2.) Using liable resources, re-search important ideas sur-rounding the topic. 3.) Include any key words to use in the report along with interest-ing facts relating to the topic. This activity allows students to outline the basis for their re-search paper. It addresses the topic, a topic question, important and interesting facts, and key terms the students will apply to their formal research paper. Steps: 1.) Give the student(s) a sheet with the word “WORDO” displayed at the top and 25 blank squares below (similar to a BINGO sheet). 2.) Allow the student(s) to choose 25 words from their vocabulary list. Each word they choose they must write in one of the blank squares (they choose where to put the words). 3.) The teacher/parent calls out each word that the stu-dents identified. The first stu-dent to have a complete row covered wins. The winner must announce each word in the row. This activity is a fun game similar to BINGO. It allows the students to become familiar with their vocabulary words. This strategy allows students to separate information and analyze what they know vs. what they learned. It is simple and knowl-edgeable all in one.
