Math Lessons for Critical Thinking

Mathematics Lessons for Critical Thinking intends to offer secondary mathematics teachers suggestions for incorporating reading, writing, and speaking practices in the teaching of mathematics. Through four lesson scenarios and through examples of lesson/unit plans and assessment instruments, the author will demonstrate concrete ways in which using a variety of written and oral texts can increase student participation and support learning in the mathematics classroom.

This document reports on the Innovations Working Group that met at the 10th International Conference “Models in Developing Mathematics Education” from the 11-17th September 2009 in Dresden, Saxony. It briefly describes the over arching and consistent themes that emerged from the numerous papers presented. The authors and titles of each of the papers presented will be listed in Table 2.

This article describes two instructional activities carried out in a ninth-grade Romanian classroom and suggests a number of reading and writing strategies that can be used to assist students in understanding and solving mathematics problems.
