After the closure of the local coalmines in the Gwendraeth Valley of South Wales, British Coal who owned the mines withdrew their funding of the Miners' Institutes and Welfare Halls, traditionally associated with the lifelong learning of coalmine communities. I was contracted to evaluate and assess the present educational output, and make recommendations for future community provision of adult education and applicable resources for ex-coalminers living in the area.

My Master's thesis, which looked at the social effects occuring after the closures of many UK coalmines, particularly those in the South Wales, South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire Coalfields. The general hypothesis originated from a well-known slogan of the time -
