I've studied at music college (guitar) but I am a self-taught fiddle player who learned to play the fiddle by ear.

It's about experiencing and living the music and about the enjoyment of playing from the very beginning.

24 years teaching experience
FIDDLEBIZZ, United Kingdom
Jan 1985 - Present
Irish Traditional music, fiddle bowing techniques, bowing styles, ornamentation, improvisation, backing songs and tunes, performing, arranging, studio work
I've been giving fiddle lessons since 1985.
Starting from INTERMEDIATE level, depending on individual progress made, I may also teach in 'blocks' : i.e. I make an individual learning program with enough work to cover a few weeks time, allowing the learner to carry on and practice & develop by himself.
Teaching in 'blocks' has the built in advantage of developing the learner's own ability to overcome occasional hurdles he might come across during practice.
This will be a usefull skill to have in years to come - it contributes to learning how to deal with mistakes and strengthens improvisation ability.
On ADVANCED level, a lesson can consist more of giving tips and advice on e.g. bowing styles and interpretation.
Overall, my style of teaching incorporates TEACHING as well as COACHING.

35+ years experience in playing and performing
Worldwide, Ireland
Jan 1973 - Present
Next to my formal education and my teaching experience, I've added 35+ years of experience in playing and performing as a professional musician as an education too, which in my view, it is.
My first instrument at music college was guitar - I had 3 years of classical training.
However, I did not want to become a classical musician.
I was already doing gigs, backing Irish Trad solo players on guitar.
By 1978 I started learning to play the fiddle through self-tuition. I learned to play the fiddle by ear.
I received occasional tips and advice from other fiddleplayers, a.o. Sean Maguire, Danny Meehan, Jim McHale and Tommy Peoples, which helped to overcome the hurdles I stumbled upon from time to time. They also gave me insight into different regional and personal styles.
This way of learning, together with the years of experience in playing and performing and my knowledge of music theory, solfege, harmony and composition, provides the basis for the way in which I teach the fiddle.
Diploma's Music Theory, Solfege, Harmony, Composition
Haarlem Music College, Netherlands
Sep 1971 - Jun 1974
I studied at Haarlem Music College, where my instrument was guitar.
Music theory, harmony, solfege and composition gave me a grounding in understanding not just classical music, but music in general, whatever the genre.
It also is very usefull knowledge to have when arranging music.
It also provided me with a knowledge base for teaching.
This base, together with years of practical experience - playing and living the music - provides the basis for the way in which I teach the fiddle.
