About
Sunanda van Straten
I grew up in South Africa and travelled to London, Milan, Ferrara, and Florence in Italy after high school. I taught Italians how to express themselves ~ more than they already do! At the same time I graduated from university with a BA in English Languages and Literature (specialisation: creative writing). I have completed the recognised CELTA teaching qualification and have extensive experience teaching dynamic and different people in a variety of contexts.
My approach to teaching is creative, authentic and practical. Anyone can learn a language, the difficulty is rediscovering your personality in a foreign language. Together we will learn how to express ourselves fluently in any situation and any topic. The lessons are conversations in which we'll use my handcrafted, original material to discuss opinions, situations, grammar and syntax. I will help you with all your personal needs in the four language skills groups (reading, writing, listening and speaking). Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced students aged 14+ are welcome.
At the moment I'm in South Africa amongst the "Dragon Mountains": the Drakensberg. I live and work on a trout farm and beautiful fly-fishing resort. Here I play with words, photographs, fish and the wild, intense reality that surrounds me.
I have been teaching for about seven years. I started tutoring high school children with extra help in various school subjects. When I went to Europe, I taught both one-on-one and class lessons to varied age groups and people. I have been empolyed by private schools and public organisations, and have been running my own private business in teaching for the last two years.
While I lived in Florence I taught students privately, structuring courses to suit their needs. I believe I did a good job based on the number of long-term, satisfied and motivated students I had.
I also did short courses. I was employed by the Municipality of Florence to conduct courses in English for the un-employed, which I had to design and administer myself.
The Army of Italy also employed me to teach their Police Force a beginners course in the language for everyday use on the streets.
One of the most interesting teaching experiences I had in Italy was with the Harley Davidson Riding Club of Chianti (Florence). They contacted me to come up with an interesting, social and relaxed way of learning English for complete beginners and advanced students. We would meet once a week; leather jackets, thundering motorcycles and ... homework, duly completed if perhaps a little tattered.
