Teaching Experience
Teacher, Learning Handicapped & Regular Education
Fontana Unified School District, California, United States
Jan 1997 - Jun 2000
Learning Handicapped, Regular Education
I IDENTIFIED students whose skills were well above those of their Learning-Handicapped classmates' in math or English, and who as a result had been repeating the same mastered skills for years in the one-size-fits-all public-school teaching approach. I started special classes before & after school, during lunch and inside class, to bring these students to regular-education standards for entry into standard high-school classes the following year.
IN CONTRAST, I identified Middle-school students whose specialized needs had never been adequately identified nor addressed and so had never risen above reading their own name. I used unique, focused methods to bring these students to a reading level that could then be addressed by the more standard special-education teaching methods.
Teacher, Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
Fontana Unified School District, California, United States
Sep 1992 - Jan 1995
Regular, Special Education
Working with a highly-talented, dedicated Deaf teacher's assistant, we employed American Sign Language and a variety of informal and formal teaching techniques to meet the various educational needs of Pre-School through 1st-Grade Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students. Their needs ranged from total language immersion to acquire language (some entered at 6-7 years of age with just a 20-word vocabulary), to socialization (they often used "language tantrums" to express their needs, lacking any language), to learning beginning reading, writing and math concepts. This was a most rewarding, intensive and creative teaching experience.
