Verbals are verb forms used as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs. We have studied two: gerunds and infinitives.
Gerund: verbal ending in -ing use as a noun (Running through the hall is against the rules.)
Infinitive: verbal in which the basic verb is preceded by "to" and which can be used as a noun, adjective, or adverb -- we are using the infinitive as a noun subject to begin our sentences (To win we must play as a team.)

Complex sentences are built from two sentences, one of which is the main sentence. The two sentences are clauses: the main sentence is the independent clause and the other sentence is the dependent clause which DEPENDS on the indpendent sentence. The independent sentence can stand alone.
To build a complex sentence, begin with two sentences:
I passed the ball forward.
My teammate scored.
The main sentence for this part of my story is "My teammate scored." This will be my independent clause.
Add the cause / effect words:
"When I passed the ball forward" is the dependent clause and is not a complete sentence able to stand alone.
The complex sentence is "When I passed the ball forward, my teammate scored." or "My teammate scored when I passed the ball forward."
