Who is the teacher? Active learning is about learning by teaching. But is that possible? Can students learn on their own without a formal teacher?In 1999, Sugata Mitra hole in the wall experiment proved that teaching is indeed a way to learn. He placed a PC with a high speed Internet connection in the hole in the wall in the slums of Delhi. He added a hidden camera in the area so he could document what was happening. The children were able to learn without a teacher. How did that happen?

Integrating Technology for Active Lifelong Learning (IT4ALL) was founded in 2006 by Dr. Nellie Deutsch and joined by Dr. Ludmila Smirnova in 2009. IT4ALL is a network of educators that provides free and low-cost professional development courses on how to integrate web technologies into full, blended online learning (BOL) courses and the flipped class using WizIQ, Moodle, Google drive, screen casting tools, audio, video, and social networks. Dr. Nellie Deutsch is internationally known as a relationship-based transformative leader, community builder, an expert in leadership, educational technology, coordinator of online professional development courses, and mentor to educators worldwide. She’s a moderator, researcher, writer, speaker, English language Learning Skills (ELLS) teacher, faculty at Atlantic University Masters of Arts in Transpersonal and leadership studies, leads online and face-to-face conferences, organizes MOOCs, and an online teacher at WizIQ. Dr. Deutsch is an accredited PAIRS (Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills), conflict resolution, and Reiki practitioner. She practices and teaches Mindfulness Meditation and the Alexander Technique.Professor Ludmila Smirnova has been at the Mount since 2001. She has taught a variety of courses, such as: Curricular Planning, Methods of Teaching Social Studies, Nature of Schools, and Society, Teaching with Technology, Readings in Literature, and Psychology of Learning.She has become increasingly recognized for her leadership in the application of emerging Internet technologies to instruction. Professor Smirnova leads numerous workshops on the application of Smart Technologies and Web 2.0 tools, effective ways of teaching online in college and primary/secondary classrooms nationally and abroad. Prior to this, she was professor of education at Volgograd State Pedagogical University (Russia), where she also served as Dean of the School of Foreign Languages for more than 7 years.
