About the Class

The presentation will outline the journey that Atlantic University has taken from a correspondence graduate school to an online university. As recently as the summer of 2010, AU conducted its business solely on a one-to-one faculty mentor to individual student basis, just as it had for more than a decade. A dozen or so faculty members took the plunge into “real” online education in the Fall of 2010, none of them ever having had online teaching experience before and only a few with face-to-face teaching experience many years back in their pasts. With a minimum of fuss and a great deal of good-hearted and patient effort, the transition AU faculty made from email/postal tutoring to online is a tale of persistence, hope, and teaching skill.

Dr. Nancy L. Zingrone is the Director of Academic and Administrative Affairs at Atlantic University, a small online graduate school whose mission is to provide a learning environment for adult learners that seeks to integrate body, mind and spirit, and through personal transformation guide their students towards profound service to others. Zingrone took up the position in May of 2010 after a thirty-plus year career in research, teaching and publishing in the scientific study of exceptional human experience. Her passion for education found a new voice through courses offered by Integrating Technology for Active Lifelong Learners and through the professional development programs and social activities of both the Virginia Society for Technology in Education and the International Society for Technology in Education conducted in the virtual world, Second Life.
