About the Class
Teaching presence has been examined in asynchronous online learning environments through the Communities of Inquiry (COI) framework of Anderson, Rourke, Garrison and Archer (2001). But what is teaching presence like in classes delivered through online synchronous platforms? This presentation shall discuss initial findings and arising themes of teaching presence based on the public classes of Dr Nellie Deutsch, as documented through recordings made available at WizIQ. The study hopes to surface a new perspective of examining teaching presence as interpreted by a novice-online teacher-researcher.
Aleta is an Assistant Professor at the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), handling online courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels under the Faculty of Education. She is also Program Chair of the Associate Arts Degree at UPOU. Aleta has been a gradeschool teacher most of her life and co-founder of the Builders' School, a small progressive school in the Philippines. As curriculum consultant, she crafts Social Studies inquiry learning projects for the Builders' School and handles online curriculum documentation. Her current research interests are: curriculum integration and inquiry learning, K-12 hybrid schools, virtual communities and platforms for blended online teaching.
