A brief history of Spoken English:

  • More than 360 dialects of English were spoken in London alone.
  • British Public Schools took the initiative and cultivated the south London speech as proper English. This was known as It was known as PSP.
  • When more and more institutions joined this effort to standardize English the nomenclature changed. It started being called RP
  • The first pronouncing dictionary was released in the year 1917
  • The English being spoken all over the world is supposed to be of the RP variety.
  • During colonial period English went to other countries and started acquiring regional accent and started incarnating in regional varieties
  • The last decades of the 20th century saw English emerge as World Language.
  • 21st Century is the era of World Standard Spoken English

Some facts about English:
  1. English began its life in the 5th Century as a humble dialect brought to England by the Germanic tribes.
  2. It grew into a language of sorts after the Norman conquest
  3. Today it is the largest language of the world.
  4. It is the language of 7/10 of all the letters written everyday all of the world
  5. It is the medium of and 6/10 of the radio & television programs produced all over the world.
  6. About 80% of the world electronically stored information is in English
