About Kirsten Winkler
Kirsten Winkler is one of the most renowned education 2.0 blogger, thought leader of the educhange movement, social entrepreneur, advisor and mentor. She started her career in education 2.0 as an online language tutor and was amongst the first “edupreneurs” in 2008.
She was amongst the pioneers who started teaching students using new technologies like, Skype and virtual classrooms. Kirsten Winkler was also one of the first educators who leveraged the new medium video through YouTube, and built a free video series for learners of German as a foreign language. Over the years, Kirsten established herself as one of the pre-eminent blogger in the education 2.0 space.
Her blog KirstenWinkler.com was awarded “Best new Blog” at the Edublog Awards 2009 and became runner up in the categories “Best Individual Blog” and “Best Resource Sharing Blog” in the 2010 edition of the awards. It is one of the reference blogs in the industry often refered to as “The TechCrunch of Online Education”.
In addition to her personal blog, she founded EDUKWEST in August 2009 as a video interview series, covering promising start-ups and companies in education 2.0 early on. Today, EDUKWEST consists of a small team of online education experts covering the various fields and markets in education, and has hosted various leaders and founders in online education, putting a spot light on this rising industry, and attracting other founders and investors as viewership alike.
In early 2010, Kirsten founded WinklerMedia and is working together with both established companies and start-ups in education, on a variety of different projects like, social media strategies or business development opportunities in e-learning. She is also the host of the This Week in Startups Paris Meetup where up-coming entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to serial entrepreneur and investor Jason Calacanis, and a global audience, live on the Internet.
In April 2011, Kirsten started her third blog Disrupt Education for Big Think where she discusses trends in education ahead of the curve targeting an audience outside of the education tech scene. Since May 2011, she has also been an advisor to the GrayMatter Foundation, a non-profit that aims to raise funds for student projects. From 2008 onwards, Kirsten has maintained a project called Deutsch Happen with the aim of helping people with an interest to learn German through free yet, valuable video lessons via YouTube. In 2011, the Deutsch Happen Facebook Fan Page was nominated as one of the “Top 25 Language Fan Pages” by Lexiophiles.
Kirsten also mentors young entrepreneurs and is the organizer of TWiST Paris, a meet-up in collaboration with US entrepreneur and investor Jason Calacanis based on the popular webcast This Week in Startups. Her latest venture in education 2.0 is the re-launch of the E-Teachers Academy. Founded in early 2009 as the business school for online teachers, the ETAcademy is scheduled to relaunch in early 2012.
Bernhard Niesner, Co-Founder busuu, states:
“Kirsten is the CNN for online education. Whenever there is something new in this fast moving industry, you will find it immediately on her blog. Her analysis are sharp, unbiased and straight to the point. Kirsten´s articles are a must-read for everybody involved in online education.”
