I am glad to see here IRODA. She is a specialist on Uzbek toponymy ‘the science which studies the place names (toponyms). It proposes to seek their significance, their etymology, but also their transformations with the wire of the centuries. Withanthroponymy (study of the names of people), it forms part ofonomastics (study of the proper names), itself connects linguistics. The name of the inhabitants rising from the toponyms is itethnonyme or it gentilé.
The field of toponymy is vast. This science studies the inhabited place names indeed (cities, villages, hamlets and variations) but also names related to the relief, with the rivers, with the transportation routes (roads, streets). It can also approach more restricted fields (names of villas or hotels for example)’.

Golden Journey to Samarkand
Golden journey to Samarkand!..
– In Europe, long ago these words became an idiom and slogan, something like a tourist brand, symbolizing a magic oriental fairy tale. They are connected with the English poet and dramatist James E. Flecker. His poem "Golden journey to Samarkand" turned into a hymn for travellers making for the East.

If you ever come to Samarkand"...
Yes, I cried in the night, so clear
Yet, I hope you reach your dream country
and that someone becomes for you what I could not be
when one day you reach your own Samarkand...
"In the town of Samarkand".

@"It is SELDOM Remembered that the stories of the Arabian nights began in SAMARKAND!!! The legend runs thus: Once upon a time there were two wise, just and popular kings who together ruled the Asian world from China to Persia. Their names were King SHAHIYAR of the main kingdom, and his younger brother, King SHAN -ZEMAN, of SAMARKAND.

was impressed by this approach: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204644504576653573191370088.html
'These projects use online tools as cognitive tools to amplify our collective intelligence. The tools are a way of connecting the right people to the right problems at the right time, activating what would otherwise be latent expertise.
Networked science has the potential to speed up dramatically the rate of discovery across all of science. We may well see the day-to-day process of scientific research change more fundamentally over the next few decades than over the past three centuries.
But there are major obstacles to realizing this goal. Though you might think that scientists would aggressively adopt new tools for discovery, they have been surprisingly inhibited. Ventures such as the Polymath Project remain the exception, not the rule'.
But, may be, they have not heard about WizIiQ ? !!!
