About the Class

Wiki-to-Speech combines wiki technology with text-to-speech technology to yield collaboratively produced, interactive dialogs. The presentation will be made using the Wiki-to-Speech technology itself (as, for example, this how-to guide )

1/ go through the 30 slides in the PDF on WizIQ, so people have some idea of what Wiki-to-Speech is all about
(Or see the comments on the Workshop home page to see and hear Wiki-to-Speech give the presentation:
http://www.wiziq.com/online-class/609309-wiki-to-speech-workshop )

2/ talk through the workshop links, getting people into the Etherpad via this wiki page:
http://code.google.com/p/wiki-to-speech/wiki/WorkshopGroups20110910

(or via this Etherpad page: http://ietherpad.com/wikitospeech-workshop-20110910-groups )

Once people have modified the scripts on the group Etherpads (names are case sensitive),

Virginia -
Happy to help. Getting text-to-speech to work in Italian (and other unicode-based texts/languages) is part of the development plan. Here was an early effort:

Hello John,
Sorry to say that I can't launch the class page. When I press the button I keep on being sent back to this workshop page.
However, I have looked at the video and presentation and read the Wiki-Speech page and look forward to enjoying working with Wiki to Speech as much as I enjoyed working in the past (and still do) with Powerpoint, MSAgent and commercial TTS programs.

I'll try to watch the workshop, but I have a meeting right before it that I don't know if it will finish on time. :(

PREREQUISITES for the Workshop:
Your priorities should be
1/ download the Wiki-to-Speech .zip file appropriate for your platform
2/ watch the YouTube video (at least the start of it)
3/ try the slide show version (again, at least the first few slides)
4/ sort out your group assignment and open and get ready to edit your group's Etherpad
5/ join the workshop!

Finally, along with the links below (for completeness), here are the actual presentation slides with the voice over script in the Speaker Notes for each slide:

Here is the first 30 slides of the workshop presentation in a .zip file.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12838403/20110909/wiziq_workshop.zip

Download and unzip this file and open wiziq_workshop.htm in your browser to see and hear the slides.

Alternatively, if you prefer, you can open wiziq_workshop.htm directly from
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12838403/20110909/wiziq_workshop.htm
but you may experience delays as each slide loads.

Finally, if you want to watch the slide show as a video, it is available on YouTube

In this workshop, we are going to make Wiki-to-Speech scripts collaboratively. The scripts will be played in class (whatever you type into your script the computer will speak). As an exercise, we will teach about The Elements http://periodictable.com/ with each student preparing one question with answers/responses for a different element.

We will work in groups of ten. Please find your group (A/B/C/D/E) from this Etherpad:

Want to help create the content for this workshop? Wiki-to-Speech is designed for collaborative content creation, just like Wikipedia. But we can use something even easier than a wiki: Etherpad. Here are the first 10 slides of the workshop in Etherpad-to-Speech format: http://ietherpad.com/wikitospeech-workshop-20110910

That script produces a slide show
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12838403/20110905/wiziq_workshop.htm

and a video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfMFqVGgYKs

Please modify the script freely.

I received an invitation to this class to my e-mail account, with a link that took me to some other place. I have to look up for the class by the name: Wiki-to-Speech Workshop. since I imagined it was on WizIq, but who knows if everyone will do it.
