About the Class

Embedding Librarian and Library Components in Moodle Courses with Dr. Indira Koneru

Embedded librarianship enables a librarian connect with and guide the students through the information (re)search process. We can create and manage library-related discussion board threads; post relevant links to course-related resources, databases, e-books and information literacy tutorials. Using discussion boards, we can post content or upload files that explain the research process from topic selection through citing sources, sending announcements of research techniques to help students solve their current information problems (Burke, J. & Tumbleson, B., 2011).

In order to establish the needed presence in the Moodle courses, we need to add Librarian role to the existing list of roles and define the role to be played. Creating a librarian role in Moodle enables librarians not only provide ‘point of need’ services to learners but also manage, blocks, activities and files and start new discussions. Librarian can access the course forums and add a library discussion/Ask-the-Librarian forum and monitor the library-related discussions and other discussion boards. Embedding information researching tutorials within the course enables learners improve their research skills. Librarians can evaluate student’s information research skills, in collaboration with the faculty.
