About the Class

The Internet is providing opportunities to learn online for free. For example, language learners can learn through Youtube, free online websites such as the British Council and BBC, on WizIQ, Supercool School, Integrating Technology for Active Lifelong Learning (IT4ALL) from teachers who provide free e-learning on blogs, wikis, nings, and other social networks, on SKYPE, Live Mocha and the list goes on. However, does free learning come with a price to the student and teacher? Here's a discussion that André Klein started on a closed facebook group called Edupreneurs Club:

Recently, I read that if a student has to pay for learning it increases his/her receptivity compared to when there is no amount charged. Especially regarding English, I'm thinking a lot about this lately. I did an informal poll on one of our facebook groups (for learning English). the majority of people there is not from the West (example: India/ Egypt/Turkey etc.) and the willingness to pay for anything (especially online) is very low.

What do you think? Join Free Online Learning on facebook and share your thoughts on the subject.

You are also invited to participate in a survey on free online learning. Please fill in the following form if you are interested.

In addition, there's a discussion going on on Linkedin .

I am a teacher from Poland. I teach Polish as a second language and English.
I have been working at Wroclaw University of Technology since 1976. Now I am learning how to teach using new technologies and I am looking for some inspiration.
In addition to this, I find talking about Culture and Cultural Differences interesting.
The discussion is very interesting for me. I have asked 100 students and they do not think that paying for on-line classes is a good idea. Majority of Polish learners and my foreigners from all over the world said that traditional method with a teacher is more effective than on-line courses.
They are interested in e- learning as an additional way of studying. All of them are proficient in computer skills.
Halina

Anything free is worthless.
People do not care about it because it is cheap worthless.
On the other hand no project can go free forever. It has to be financed somehow.
Cost of online is very very low if shared by millions such as online english.
So make a wonderful online english for the world I will buy it at $ 2 per person per year but quantity is 100.000 per yearmay be even 1 million .
Nellie is great. We need an online similar to www.englishtown.com they charge
200 or so $ per year per person they make billions of $ .
Wiziqe provide somehow disorganised content, there fore we cannot follow a regular course.
My motto
spend 1 million $ to develop
but share it with 1 million people.
That is what ONLINE is.

Hello Muvaffak,

You are correct in many ways. I can create courses but they are worthless without the students' active participation. I will cater to the students once I know their needs for free if you or someone else sponsors the project and pays me and others for developing it.

I am a Seller.. OOPS! the Teacher too! Interested to know: Who create/develop/market OOPS! Teach Russian via English. Found them ,watched their recordings. Liked Elena's class from Bulgaria. At first was even suspisious: What a combination of taught languages!!!But only watching her class (called Buying /Sharing the products/services in Marketing) I can confess: she can be the MASTER!!! Am happy to be a friend of Elena Zlatanova, because both Elenas are so multilingual and therefore so multicultural!!!I assume that there is a great sense in the words of Mohammad_z@"We can use free learning just as advertising for our company or for ourselves" in action, especially using a new functioning tool at WiZiQ, demonstrating Logos of companies. The logos of only western edu companies were demonstrated so many times..
I believe that companies can be established and went with new market demands but PEOPLE..
I highly recommend to taste some best eduproducts/services for everyone, but not only in English or in their Mother tongue! only then you can measure your gained new knowledge for Your spent Time , Efforts !!! Also, the business as usual..

Money can be seen as a way to exchange goods or energy (like in the old times where farmers gave corn for eggs etc.). There is nothing wrong about charging money. The challenge is to create online education systems that will be unselfish and yet useful to people in the world. Identifying needs and creating courses and online opportunities to fill the needs. There should be scholarships and other considerations also. For example say that there is a course offered to teach a particular skill like trigonometry that is needed by folks who want to pass some government tests. People in India may not have the same resources as folks in the USA to pay for this so there should be some rules created by a committee or an advisory board to decide how to deal with this kind of situation so it will be fair for everyone.

Very interesting point of view Dani. Your suggestions reminds me of the barter. One individual exchanges something of value in lieu of money.

I believe this is a topic many teachers have thought about but have been afraid to start, and I am one of them. I will definitely be there as I wonder what the more experienced teachers have to say. I am also happy to share my opinions.

Salom Jason West , have read all your publications with a great interest .Especially this one “Macmillan admits to bribery over World Bank Sudan aid deal " .People over the world must know, that Macmillan, the British publishing giant, has admitted it made "corrupt payments" in an attempt to win a World Bank aid contract in Africa. It is a pity ,but Macmillan is the only one English publishing presented in Uzbekistan, the only one ruler so to say, therefore no idea of competition ever ...we must read only old-fashioned published books brought by Macmillan dealers to here .I dream to get a cheap issue of Doris Lessing short stories for my Home English Reading project, but it seems that Macmillan people at its Uzbek office never heard about that..
I am reading now “Four Shakespeare History Plays” Unbelievable ,but it is mentioned that the Language consultant of this Macmillan series, published especially for Uzbek readers with comments in both English and Uzbek is Uliana Lee ,a Korean, who does not understand/speak Uzbek..
