About the Class
We will explore definitions and examples of figurative language; a form of English usage which employs imagery and symbolism. I will introduce terms such as metaphor, idiom, simile, hyperbole, and personification.
Figures of speech such as the metaphor are often utilized in poetry and song lyrics. During class I will offer songs and lyrics by the original artists. In this manner it will be possible to hear the essential emphasis of each expression. The music will be followed by a reading of the lyrics. We will identify the kind of language in the lyrics to each song, and a general analysis will follow.
Time permitting I will play 3-4 songs from the list below.
