About the Class

This presentation will cover:

  • A review of points covered in the first two presentations made in this series (traditional ethical systems, their problems, and new perspectives in Business Ethics)
  • Thought experiments for Environmental Ethics
  • A discussion of fundamental issues for Environmental Ethics, such as the source of values (human, divine, intrinsic) and the appropriate use of raw materials (utilitarian perspectives)
  • Summaries of basic ideas presented by a selection of important contemporary writers (Baxter, Singer, and novelist Michael Crichton, author of Jurassic Park)
All of this is with an eye toward developing a Global Business Ethics suitable to today''s complex world. The instructor has a Ph.D. in philosophy and has taught undergraduate Business Ethics several times. His approach is academic, but information and ideas presented are intended for the general public. Topics include some references to traditional writers (Kant, Mill, Aristotle) as well as contemporary writers (Baxter, Singer). Those who plan on attending are encouraged to participate in the Global Ethics Survey at Global Ethics Quiz prior to attending the session.

Language of instruction:

Keywords: business ethics, traditional ethical systems, techniques, problems with ethical systems

Profile Summary

I have experience in sales, technical writing, network engineering, and teaching.

In recent years, most of my work has been for online schools, as an instructor and course designer. I have designed and/or taught courses in Ethics, Business Ethics, Globalization, and Introduction to Philosophy.
I worked in several areas of engineering and technology, including some assignments as a technical writer and a software salesman, before earning my Ph.D. in Philosophy from CUNY in 1999. I run two websites and a blog. Pages from my websites are used by several schools as part of their course materials.

I am currently doing research for a new book, which will probably focus on environmental ethics.
