About the Class

Several students have asked what happens after you purchase a domain and hosting. How do I get my website on the internet? Why can't I see my website when I type my domain name into a browser? Why do I need to buy hosting?

This session will answer these questions. In the first part of the session, I will review why you need both hosting and a domain to have a live website. I will then show how you link a domain to a hosting account to make your website visible on the internet.

The second part of the session will show you how to install WordPress on your website, both automatically and manually. Once WordPress is installed, you can start building your website.

For those who expressed an interest in purchasing web hosting, I recommend www.hostgator.com

You can use coupon code GATORBEMYVALENTINE to save $9.94 off your order.

@ Priscilla and Tanja: I watched the recording and it inspired me to get Word Press as I use a third party blog and a third party forum. I have Networksolutions and they did not support php unless I got their Linux package. I went ahead and did this for $253.00. In doing so, I can now use mt OWN forum and my OWN blog, in this case word press. However, I did not want word press to take over my entire site but just to be used as a separate blog. This being said, I was having a difficult time finding how to edit the HOME page on word press. For those of your students whom may be interested, these are the steps.

1). Create a new page and name it "home".
(When you go to the home page of your blog, you will now see 2 home pages. This of course you do not want).

2). Go to Administation - Settings - Reading settings.
(It is here that you set your "Front Page" or Static page to the Home page that you created.)

By doing this, you erase your word press default home page and now your Home page that you created is your home page.

Anyone who has Networksolutions. This hosting package does not support php language unless you have the Linux package. If you have the standard windows package, which is what I had, then you will have to switch over.

One big plus about networksolutions is that they do have a 5 step automatic install for all of their forums and for word press. There even have a plug in that you can install so that if you were using blogger as a blog, they will automatically import blogger into word press and I thought this was a really great feature.

Anyway, thank you so much for your knowledge!
