About the Class

After last year's Sociology of Religions general course, the objective of this year’s course is to study Islam using the proper methodology of Sociology of Religions.
We will be examining the relations between religion an society with a necessary look at the cultural and historical elements that characterized the development of the Islamic religion from its sunrise till nowadays.
We will be seeing subjects such as the life of the Prophet, the Revelation, the problems regading the succession, the developments after the death of the Prophet, the juridical schools, the Muslim organizational typologies, the economical ethics, the reformist groups, the geography of Islam with its different cultural elements, the relations between Islam and human rights.

CURRICULUM
Masters in Human Resources Management at Alma Graduate School (2007).
Degree in Sociology at the Faculty of Political Science University of Bologna. Thesis: "Taoism between tradition and modernity" (2005).
After the thesis he continued his studies on Taoism in collaboration with the Association Buddhist Chan Zatma, with whom he has contributed to a research on Chan Buddhism in southern China, "Assault on the Summit" and which still works . He later became interested in Judaism and Islam, with particular attention to the reform movements and mysticism.
Giacalone also puts great emphasis on intercultural and interreligious issues and travelled to England on several occasions to study the dynamics of immigration and integration.
