About the Class

Melissa explains you the principles of how to eat and live well with the latest and greatest research and recommendations on functional foods. Some of the things she would cover in the session include:

  • Learn how blueberry extracts are healing cancerous lesions;
  • The benefits of herbs and spices and
  • The cholesterol lowering properties of foods like açai, pecans and cinnamon.
You will also discover ways to slow down aging, keep your mind sharp and improve digestion.

After this session you will:
  • Be able to clearly define functional foods, phytonutrients and nutraceuticals and understand their role in both disease treatment and prevention;
  • Be able to list functional foods active components and their corresponding health benefits;
  • Identify many types of herbs, spices, fruits, vegetables and whole grains as functional foods;
  • Understand changing trends and new research in phytonutrients in relationship to our diet;
  • Incorporate the foods and nutrients discussed in every day life;
  • Understand the role these foods play in an overall balanced approach to eating all foods in moderation.

Melissa Halas-Liang, MA, RD, CDE is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Diabetes Educator and holds a Masters degree in Nutrition Education. Melissa has the Certificate of Training for Childhood and Adolescent Weight Management. She has 15 years of diverse experience in nutrition management, counseling, teaching, media and writing and currently serves as Co-President of the Los Angeles District of the California Dietetic Association (CDA) and Spokesperson for CDA.
