About the Class

One of the areas that many English students find difficult in IELTS types of exams is the listening portion. There are many classes devoted to improving test skills and tricks for getting through these exams. It is my desire to create a better way. If one is truly fluent and conversant in English there is almost no benefit to trying to develop a strategy to pass an exam.

The online course we will be conducting is based on the movie "His Girl Friday". It is in the public domain and therefor can be freely used by us however we wish.

The unique qualities that drew me to this movie is that the dialog (spoken parts) is the fastest I have ever heard. Our class will train our ears and brains to operate at speed. Much as in speed reading courses, it is my opinion that we will simply train ourselves to adjust to very fast listening speeds. Theoretically we will then become very proficient and comfortable at normal speeds. This would then give a student the ability to analyze and keep notes with ease during most listening tasks.

It should also prove to be a fun way to practice our English. While dated, this movie and script will provide a wealth of information for understanding the English language. We will also be using drama (role-playing parts from script), discussions and other techniques in approaching your English as a skill vs. an academic endeavour.
