About the Class

Almost everyone, at one time or another, observes other people. We observe people as they talk, eat, work, play, and interact with others and with us. Based on our observations of other people (and also of ourselves), we tend to make generalizations about human behavior and human nature.

Our observations and generalizations usually serve us fairly well in our daily lives. But no matter how many experiences we have had, most of our personal observations are fleeting and haphazard. We sift through experience for things that interest us, but we often ignore the obvious because it does not fit our ideas about how things ought to be. Thus, we cannot draw scientific conclusions based only on our own unstructured observations.
