Software Engineering didn't started thousands of years back and we are lucky in a way that we live in an age where communication drives our life. Knowing a particular technology is one thing but knowing where does one technology differs from another and implementing/integrating the right technologies is an art that develops if you know the history of how technologies came into being and what drives them and above all what you can do in order to fetch the most out of them. A blend of the above art and a right attitude would make a great software engineer.
