About the Class

Moodle is a software package for producing Internet-based courses and web sites. It is a global development project designed to support a social constructionist framework of education.

Moodle is provided freely as Open Source software (under the GNU Public License). Basically this means Moodle is copyrighted, but that you have additional freedoms. You are allowed to copy, use and modify Moodle provided that you agree to: provide the source to others; not modify or remove the original license and copyrights, and apply this same license to any derivative work. Read the license for full details and please contact the copyright holder directly if you have any questions.

The word Moodle was originally an acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment, which is mostly useful to programmers and education theorists. It''s also a verb that describes the process of lazily meandering through something, doing things as it occurs to you to do them, an enjoyable tinkering that often leads to insight and creativity. As such it applies both to the way Moodle was developed, and to the way a student or teacher might approach studying or teaching an online course. Anyone who uses Moodle is a Moodler.

Teachers and Students benefit from using Moodle:

Benefits:
1. Save time and money on photocopying course materials
2. Less weight as you save on paperwork (or paper marking) to carry with you
3. Fast correcting and marking work
4. Interactive classwork, homework and assignments
5. Easy to follow grading and evaluations
6. Engaging activities to motivate and challenge students.

This intensive, five-week-long course is designed to engage you in theories and practices of online learning and teaching with Learning Management System Moodle. By successfully completing this course you will be ready to teach online or blended courses using Moodle.
In this course, you will be introduced to online learning pedagogies and best practices, to the process of systematic instructional design. Moodle course development tools will be demonstrated, reviewed and practiced. You will work together to design or redesign your course syllabus, integrate synchronous and asynchronous learning activities into your course, develop assessments for online learning, and share and reflect on the process of developing online or blended online courses. This course is blended online per se, delivered via the platforms (Moodle and WikiEducator) that are available to anybody for free. This will help you to understand online learning from studentsÂ’ perspectives, and prepare your future courses in a learner-centered approach.
The goal of this course is to help ensure the quality of online learning through both the systematic instructional design of online and blended online courses and instructor training on online pedagogies for delivery of courses. Specifically, this course will cover the following broad topics:
* Introduction to online learning & Moodle * Instructional design and development with Moodle and WikiEducator * Interactions and collaborative learning (Moodle way) * Assessments in online learning (Moodle tools) * Moodle Course content development and maintenance
