About the Class:
Participants from around the world share their cultures every week. Sharing information about your country and culture is an excellent way to improve your English speaking and writing, improve your public presentation skills, and learn how to use technology and most importantly about your own culture and cultures around the world. The moderators will help you create your PowerPoint slides, edit your English, and guide you on how to give public speaking workshops for free. Watch all the past videos of the live online sessions on WiZiQ:
About the presenter: Nellie Deutsch
Gladys Gahona and Nellie Deutsch will moderate the storytelling events. Gladys Gahona is a Mexican private teacher on Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics. In 1977, in order to economically support her academic studies, she started teaching math at a secondary school. In 1981 she graduated in chemical engineering at Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY), in Mérida, Yucatán, México. During the last years of my university studies, she worked at UADY at the former Planning Department (today General Coordination of Planning and Institutional Assessment) where she had the opportunity to be assistant of several educational researchers, working in collaborating projects along with several Mexican and foreign universities. In 2002 she graduated in Technology Management at UADY. Although my professional formation is oriented to engineering, productivity, business and technology management, Gladys has loved teaching since ever. Her job (Assessor MFQ academy, in Cancun, Q.Roo, México) consists on tutoring and providing counseling to learners of secondary & early tertiary level, helping them on homework, or preparing them for examinations. There is a special group she loves to work with, adult people. They are confident and enthusiastic learners, they always give the best of them. The knowledge she has gained on teaching/tutoring comes from her personal experiences and self-studies. She's also been a self learner in computing, web programing, ITC and web 2.0 platforms and tools. Since last November she has had the privilege to meet Nellie Deutsch who has become an inspiring mentor to me on improving my English language as well as moderating live online conferences, facilitating online courses, and integrating technology to education. Now she dedicates her professional life to her two passions: teaching and learning, particularly learning by doing and learning by "helping". Nellie (Muller) Deutsch has been teaching English as a foreign language for over 30 years. She has been integrating technology into the ESL/EFL classroom since the 1990s. Nellie has been involved in international collaborative projects and WebQuests via Moodle for the past 5 years. Her first website, Nellie's English Projects was an experiment that evolved from a WebQuest and started her off as a webmistress in the days of html before web 2.0 tools. Nellie facilitates online and face-to-face workshops on how to use Wikieducator as a collaborative tool for instruction and learning and conduct online workshops and conferences. Nellie also moderates live online workshops for Electronic Village Online which is a project of TESOL's CALL Interest Section. In addition, she conducts online workshops on storytelling and cultures, integration of technology and web 2.0 tools and Moodle into the classroom on Wikieducator and WiZiQ. Nellie is researching blended learning and instructor use of technology in higher education for my doctoral dissertation. In her spare time, Nellie mentors educators on how to integrate web 2.0 tools for instruction and learning. She would like to see e-learning available and free worldwide. Nellie is looking forward to collaborating with other educators on the best ways to integrate technological tools in order to facilitate and improve instruction and learning.
