About the presenter: Richard Torgerson
My full name is Richard Christen Torgerson, Jr. I am an Elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and serve as a counselor in my local Elder's Quorum. My education background includes a BA in Chinese, an MA in Language Acquisition & Teaching as well as a TESOL certificate. At present I am working to complete my coursework at Kent State University in a doctoral program entitled Cultural Foundations of Education. My areas of expertise are philosophy of education, international/comparative education and intercultural education. My research interests center on issues of faith, family and freedom within educational settings (both formal and non-formal) and I have a special focus on China/US comparative education. My dissertation research will be focused on a finding commonalities between a diversity of religious students beliefs, attitudes and lived experiences within public/secular tertiary institutions. I have over 12 years of teaching experience in a church setting as well as three years of college teaching experience and my professional goals are focused on teaching university students in the fields of comparative educational policy and philosophy. I have a sincere love and appreciation for other cultures, and have been a student of Chinese language and culture for over seven years. Finally, beyond study and work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and three children, serving in the church, playing guitar, reading, writing or going outdoors.
