About the Class
English language is rich in its vocabulary. One of the reasons for this is its ability to make new words from the base or the root word. This is done by adding letters either before or after the root word. These letters are what we call as affixes. Affixes cannot be used alone. In other words, as such they are meaningless. But used with words, they become meaningful. The letters that we add before a word is known as prefix and that added at the end of the word is suffix.
E.g.:- Take the word happy. You add un- to that. So it becomes unhappy. You get a different word. In fact the opposite word. We will discuss many more words which get their antonyms by adding different prefixes like ir-, il-, non-, im-, in-, dis-,mis-, etc.
Now coming to the suffixes. Add -ness to the word happy. You get happiness. Similarly add ily, you get happily. Similar suffixes are ment, -tion, -sion, -or, -er ier, -est , -able etc.
Now we will see more words, how they change their parts of speech by the change of the suffixes. It is really interesting to think of so many words thus formed by the addition of suffixes and prefixes.
Thus we saw that from the root word happy, we got another 5,6 words. So imagine how many words can you learn if you just take up a few words and try adding prefixes or suffixes to them. So wear your thinking caps and make as many words as you can using the affixes.
