About the Class

Read: http://www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/2004/03.11/01-mockus.html BEFORE the class begins. List questions and/or comments you will ask during our class. These may include questions/comments about idiomatic expressions, cultural differences, vocabulary, geographic locations, politics, more.
Optional: Review the PowerPoint "Literature CirclesBEFORE our class begins. Choose one of the following roles described in this PowerPoint :

  • literary luminary,
  • creative connector,
  • vocabulary vitalizer,
  • idea illustrator,
  • character captain,
  • rigorous researcher,
  • travel tracer,
  • or essence extractor.
Read the "job description" for the role you have chosen. Apply it to the Mockus article: www.hno.harvard.edu/gazette/2004/03.11/01-mockus.html. Prepare to share which role you chose and how you related your role to the article to our discussion. For example, if you choose ''character captain,'' you might decide to think about how a citizen might react to Mayor Mockus'' strategies, and share your thoughts with us. Or, if you choose ''travel tracer,'' you might prepare a Google map that shows all of the locations, and then during our session you could upload the map for all of us to view and discuss.

Some questions the presenter would like you to think about:
  1. Talk about whether or not you think Mayor Mockus'' ideas could be implemented successfully in your community. Why or why not?
  2. What is one idea or story mentioned in this article that really surprised you? Why?
  3. Tell us about one or more issues/problems/challenges in your local area that you would like to see changed/improved. Why? Has this article given you any new ideas for innovative approaches to improving the situation(s)?
Hope to hear you on WiZiQ March 7, Holly

Hello Teacher, Many thinks to your help with our English. I was really thankful to what you are doing to help people improve their English. I think most those who connect to this site need to practize speaking, so if you gave us easy text with more simple vocabulary to read we would be able to talk. And if the contain of the articles is more familiar to our evreyday life, we can probably more ideas to share. Thank you again for your help. I am looking for your next lesson. best wishes
