IELTS
IELTS stands for
International English Language Testing System. It is quite commonly misspelled as ilets, ielt, iltes, ietls, or eilts but IELTS is the correct version.
IELTS or International English Language Testing Service is the International English Language Testing System or the English language test which tests the English language proficiency. The IELTS is conducted jointly by British Council, the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL) and IELTS Australia, which is the sub-division of IDP, the leading educational organization of Australia.

IELTS test structure
There are two versions of the IELTS exam: the Academic Version and the General Training Version:
- The Academic Version of IELTS test is intended for those who want to enroll in universities and other institutions of higher education and for professionals such as medical doctors and nurses who want to study or practice in an English-speaking country.
- The General Training Version of IELTS test is intended for those planning to undertake non-academic training or to gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.
For the
English language course test candidates take the same Listening and Speaking Modules, while the Reading and Writing Modules differ depending on whether the candidate is taking the Academic or General Training Versions of the ILETS Test.
A total of 2 hours and 45 minutes are given to write the IELTS exam: Listening (30 minutes), Reading (60 minutes), Writing (60 minutes) and Speaking (11–14 minutes). The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are done in one sitting whereas the Speaking test may be on the same day or up to seven days before or after the other tests.
The Speaking test is conducted in the form of a one-to-one interview with an examiner. The examiner assesses the candidate as he or she is speaking.
IELTS test registration
- Find your nearest IELTS test centre and check the test dates that suit you.
- Print the IELTS application form online or ask your test centre for a copy.
- Submit the application form in the IELTS test centre with the test fee, two passport sized photographs and a photocopy of your passport.
- The IELTS test centre will confirm the date and time when you want to take your test.
IELTS result
There is no pass or fail in IELTS test result. Every organization sets its own level. Scores are graded on the 9-band system. You receive individual band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and an Overall Band Score on a band scale from one to nine.

IELTS or TOEFL
Over 2,500 US institutions recognize and accept either IELTS or TOEFL for admission to award courses. However, you must enquire with your institution before making up your mind. You can check the list for the institutes that accept IELTS scores for admission by logging on to www.IELTS.org.
