Briefly on the Institute (1) History : Briefly on the Institute (1) History Institute was established on October 1, 1956, as Institute of Physics and Mathematics Since January 1, 1977 the Institute has been called Institute of Mathematics and Cybernetics Since 1990 – Institute of Mathematics and Informatics In soviet time the Institute belonged to Lithuania Academy of Science which was a part of USSR Academy of Science Currently it is an independent state scientific institute, – a budgetary institution for scientific researches
Briefly on the Institute (2) Management : Briefly on the Institute (2) Management The Council consists of 31 member: 20 members of the Council (10 representatives of informatics science trend and 10 – of mathematics science trend) are secret ballot of the scientists of IMI 10 members of the Council are nominated by the Ministry of science and Education Director of the Institute is also a member of the Council (by post) Term of the Council is 5 years. Fields of Activities : Fields of Activities The main activity of the Institute is scientific research and experimental development. Staff (1) : Staff (1) At present headcount of the Institute is about 200. The scientific activity is concentrated in 13 scientific departments: 6 departments of mathematical trend 7 departments of informatics and informatics engineering In some departments sectors or groups of researchers are set up to execute particular projects. About 175 researchers are working at the scientific departments including: 32 doctors habilius (27 dr. habil., professors) 47 doctors (17 docents (associate professors))

Upbringing of Scientists : Upbringing of Scientists Two chairs have been set up to organise doctoral studies at the Institute: Chair of Mathematics Chair of Informatics There are 38 doctoral students: 30 of them are full students, 8 are extramural students. In addition, there is a UNESCO Chair „Informatics for the Humanities“ that is training scientists of the humanitarian trends in the computer sphere

Scientific Organisational Activities : Scientific Organisational Activities Together with partners, in the period of 2000-2004, the Institute has organized 9 international events: conferences, workshops, etc. Some conferences are held regularly. In 2000-2004, the IMI took part in 3 exhibitions. One of them was World Exhibition EXPO 2000. 6 scientific seminars are held regularly at the Institute, in which experts of corresponding fields from other institutions of science and studies participate as well. The scientists of Institute are members of editorial boards of many international journals; referees, experts, as well as estimators of work of international contests; they also participate in the activities of world and European scientific organisations.
Conferences organized by IMI (1) : Conferences organized by IMI (1) International Vilnius Conference on the Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics In the period of 1973-2002, 8 conferences have been held. The initiator and main organiser of the conference was academician Vytautas STATULEVIČIUS. The participants are greeted by Lithuanian President Valdas ADAMKUS 1998 2002 Prime Minister Algirdas BRAZAUSKAS participated at the opening ceremony of the Conference The 9th Vilnius Conference will be held on 25-30 June, 2006
Conferences organized by IMI (2) : Conferences organized by IMI (2) Baltic Conference on Data Bases and Information Systems It is held every second year (Baltic DB&IS 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006) On the initiative and constant participation of the Institute, six International Baltic DB&IS Conferences have been held since 1994, two of which in Lithuania. The next Baltic DB&IS Conference will be held also in Lithuania in 2006.
