The last few decades have witnessed a significant change in the demands on the schooling system. To begin with, the schools have increased in size. The stakeholders, namely the students, teachers, staff, parents, government and society have become much more demanding. The environment, plagued with insecurity and disrespect has become an area of challenge. Concerns of financial management have become important. However, the organization structures continue to be what they were fifty years back. The principal and the owner-manager have a task much more complex than what it used to be and fragmentation of the same only makes things more difficult. In the process, the quest for quality takes a back seat. Quality then rests solely on the quality of students and anomalous initiative of the committed teacher, both a matter of chance.
There is a crying need to put management systems in place so that the logistic and maintenance issues can be delegated and employees trained and empowered to manage them. An appropriate MIS supported by strategic interventions may allow the owner-manager and the principal to focus on the critical aspects of quality and excellence. That management tools would need to fine-tune to each unique situation is obvious, an appreciation and understanding of the same is a pre-requisite. The need of the hour is to understand the subtle interplay among organization structure and processes, the human dimension and technology. The owner-manager and the principal will have to be the change agents and modernize the school management systems through transformational leadership. It is with this background, this workshop has been created.
