Are you entering the engineering college prepared for success or you are leaving things to chance?

 

This online workshop provides you with a better understanding of the field of engineering, and introduces project-oriented learning approach. Importantly, you also get to review concepts from Math and Science that would help you build a solid foundation in Mathematics and science - the base of engineering.

Week 2 Review of important concepts: metric prefixes, standard units, Newton’s laws, etc; what do you really need to know, memorize, how important are graphing calculators
Week 3 Thinking “like an engineer”; engineering design and problem solving; simulation and modeling, common software
Week 4 Innovation and entrepreneurship; societal issues in engineering; ; introduction to parabolic oven project
Week 5 Introduction to civil engineering, Grand Challenge: Repairing aging infrastructure; bridges and bridge design, significance of vectors and trigonometry in engineering
Week 6 Continuation of week 5 topics, stress and strain, materials properties
Week 7 Introduction to mechanical engineering, energy transfer and heat transfer (for solar oven project), Grand Challenge: making solar energy affordable
Week 8 More on engineering design approach and the design of a prototype; predicting the solar oven performance; cost-benefit analyses
Week 9 Collecting and analyzing data continued – instrumentation and measurement, experimental error
Week 10 Collecting and analyzing data; mean and variance; best fit lines; microsoft excel models, writing great project reports

Mary C. Baker is a Ph.D. holder who is working as a professor in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Texas Tech University. Her qualifications include:

 

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, The University of Texas at Arlington, 1988
  • M.S. Applied Physics, Texas Tech University, 1985
  • B.S. Engineering Physics, Texas Tech University, 1983

 

She is a recipient of numerous awards, including:

 

  • IEEE Pulsed Power Student of the Year Award, 1989
  • Texas Tech Ex-Students Association New Faculty of the Year Award (College of Engineering), 1991
  • Moms & Dads Association Hemphill Wells New Faculty Teaching Award (University wide), 1992
