Hawaiian Language 101

Course Description

The Hawaiian Language 101 online course is for anyone interested in learning, practicing, speaking or brushing up on their Hawaiian language/'Ōlelo Hawai'i.

The use of music, chanting and art will used to teach the Hawaiian Language. Here is the teacher's message:

“My goal in teaching this class is to perpetuate and preserve what was taught to me. I want my class to be a safe zone where making mistakes is okay and the important thing is everyone is learning and having fun in the process."

• Mele (Song)
• Ho'olauna (Introduction)
• Kuisa (Quiz)/'Ōlelo No'eau (Hawaiian Proverb) *If there is no quiz then the 'ōlelo no'eau comes first.
• Ha'awina (Lesson)/Pahuhopu (Goal / Objective)
• Hua'ōlelo Hou (New Vocabulary Words)
• Pule (Prayer)

• Hawaiian Class 1 : Lā Mua (First Day of Class) Introductions and Overview of course objectives
• Hawaiian Class 2 : Ha'awina (Lesson) #1: Nā Kauoha (Commands) me nā Welina (Greetings)
• Hawaiian Class 3 : Ha'awina #2: 'Ohana (Family)
• Hawaiian Class 4 : Ha'awina #3: Nā Nīnau 5 (5w's)
