Avail this opportunity to respond to literature in a creative way with an experienced teacher acting as facilitator!
This course is designed as a book discussion group for young Book Lovers. Students in Grades 4th to Grade 6th will gain the experience in responding to literature in a creative way after attending these discussion. Not only will you benefit from an appreciation of literature but also enhanced verbal communication skills.
You will work on ‘The Giver’ by Lois Lowry, widely regarded as a canonical work among educators who believe that young adult audiences respond best to contemporary literature. You will be assigned five chapters of the book (Lowry, 1993) at a time, and will be given assignments to prepare for upcoming discussions. In 14 LIVE interactive discussions you will:
- Learn to respond to literature in a creative way
- Improve your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
- Become better communicators in today’s competitive world

About course instructor:
Sandra Price Blyden has taught as an elementary teacher for 15 years. She has instructed students from kindergarten through sixth grade in core content areas (reading, language arts, science social studies, and mathematics. She has also worked a Literacy Coach for last 7 years. As a literacy coach, she monitored reading program, plans and analyzes assessment data, and coaches teachers. Sandra is also the sole proprietor of KIWI (Kids Interacting, Working with their Imagination) Learning Center.
Qualifications :
- Pursuing Master's of Science in Reading and Literacy from Walden University (Anticipated graduation date: June 2012)
- Certified in St. Thomas-St. John district in elementary education (2008-2013)
- Passed Reading PRAXIS in elementary reading ( 2008)
