La Voz Latina: A Small Group Curriculum for Latina Students
Kerrie Troseth
School counselors are constantly challenged to meet the needs of all students; however, student needs seem to multiply yearly. Recently, educational initiatives to close the achievement gap are forcing schools to re-examine how they can parlay counseling services to increase academic success for all students. While the task may seem daunting, school counselors can tackle the issue slowly and methodically. One strategy is to implement counseling groups. Groups can deliver pertinent information and guidance in a safe environment to select low achieving students. This book will focus on facilitating a counseling group for high school Latina students. La Voz Latina provides curriculum that assists Latinas to become self-aware, challenge cultural/societal beliefs, construct future goals, identify potential obstacles to graduating high school and matriculating to college, investigate careers and colleges, and more. Besides offering lessons, this book also provides worksheets, handouts, activities, and forms - everything a school counselor needs to implement the group. The curriculum is a true time-saver and a must for the school counselor library.
